Commercial vehicle repair firm values resource efficiency support

M and S Commercials, a commercial vehicle repair and maintenance firm in Bury, has identified annual savings of £16,000 and 21 tonnes of CO2e with resource efficiency support from ENWORKS.

Operating from a former mill site in Radcliffe, M and S Commercials offers a number of repair services for commercial vehicles and trailers, including complete trailer refurbishment, servicing and MOT preparation, damage repairs, shot blast and repainting.

The company was founded in 1985 and employs 33 staff.

ENWORKS support

M and S started receiving resource efficiency support from ENWORKS in May 2014 after signing up to receive Green Intelligence.

Following an on-site review, ENWORKS identified a number of potential efficiency improvements for the company.

Solvent management

To remain compliant with pollution control regulations, M and S has to manage and report its use of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) solvents for its repainting services.

The company has already installed a solvent recycling machine to reduce solvent use by 50 per cent.

However, ENWORKS found that a further £8,500 of potential savings could be made through use of solvents, and purchasing thinners and paints in larger containers to reduce residues and solvent evaporation to air.

Renewable energy

With the company planning to replace its roof in the future, ENWORKS was also able to quantify the potential benefits of installing a solar PV panel on the new roof.

With a 25kW solar array, ENWORKS calculated that M and S could save over £4,500 a year through reduced electricity costs and Feed-in Tariff (FiT) income. This would have a payback of less than six years and also save over seven tonnes of CO2e annually.

Lighting upgrades

By replacing T8 fluorescent tube lighting with more efficient T5 or LED alternatives and installing Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors, ENWORKS identified additional savings of £2,600 and 10.5 tonnes of CO2e.

Compressed air

ENWORKS also undertook a compressed air survey on the site, identifying a number of air leaks in the workshop which M and S has now fixed.

Finally, by recovering heat from the compressor to warm the company’s painting bay in winter, ENWORKS was able to identify further annual savings of £900 and 3.7 tonnes of CO2e.

‘Invaluable support’

Sue Strickland, company secretary at M and S Commercials, said: “ENWORKS has provided us with invaluable support to help us identify areas where we can make savings and ensure that we remain complaint with solvent management regulations.

“We look forward to putting some of these recommendations in place to achieve the savings identified.”

Next steps

ENWORKS Advisor, Laura Bramley, said:

“M and S Commercials are clearly committed to making environmental improvements and are keen to identify and implement measures wherever they can. We will continue to work with M and S to help them identify new savings opportunities and develop an environmental policy to highlight their environmental commitments to customers and suppliers.”
