Display designer gets sustainable forest certification

An Oldham designer and manufacturer of retail displays has opened doors to new business by sourcing all the timber it uses from sustainably managed forests.

Axiom Displays has been designing and producing retail displays for well-known retail groups for over 55 years and achieved the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Standard  in March 2018.

The certification ensures that the 500 tonnes of timber and timber products it handles every year are from sustainably managed forests.

The company teamed up with the GC Business Growth Hub  to work through the complex compliance process, which it passed “with flying colours”.

Opening doors

Claire Scott, environmental business advisor at the Hub, said: “FSC certification is a business priority for those like Axiom who want to open doors into sectors where environmental credentials are vital, like construction, education and the public sector.

“Through regular site visits we helped Axiom translate the requirements of FSC into practice and educate staff on sustainable timber and why it’s important.”

Phil Barton, production director at Axiom Displays, said: “We passed our FSC audit with flying colours. We’re already working on new furniture product lines for schools and offices which we can now market as sustainably sourced.

“The Business Growth Hub and Claire’s hard work to help us achieve certification was brilliant, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Continual improvement

This was not the first time the two have teamed up to boost environmental performance - in 2016 Axiom achieved significant cost, carbon and energy savings by installing a biomass heating system fuelled by its own production waste.
