Update from Councillor Andrew Western – Green City Portfolio Lead
Contributed by Tina Bugliosi
We are beginning to plan now for how Greater Manchester will recover from the social and economic shocks that COVID has brought about. We need to ensure that recovery makes us stronger than before and better equipped to support our longer-term environmental goals.
The attached Annual Environment Report for 2019/20 covers the excellent work of Greater Manchester Authorities and our partners working across the conurbation over the past year. Good progress has been made in delivering the first year of the GM 5 Year Environment Plan and I’d like to thank all of our partners for their enthusiasm and hard work. I’d also like to encourage more organisations, businesses and individuals to get involved.
The COVID-19 emergency has affected all areas of our society and will, in turn, have a mixed impact on Greater Manchester’s ability to deliver our Five Year Environment Plan. Whilst some of our key low-carbon projects are currently having to pause, particularly those involving energy efficiency and local energy generation in people’s homes, many are still progressing through online research and development. Greater Manchester has adopted a Mission-Based Approach to delivery of our Five-Year Environment Plan. This involves cross-sectoral groups working together to tackle some of the challenges we face around carbon emissions, air quality, recycling and biodiversity loss. The GM Mission-Based Approach is also successfully continuing online.
