World Refill Day (16 June) is a global campaign led dedicated to tackling plastic pollution by making it easier for people to live with less waste.
The day encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to take action by choosing to reuse and refill instead of buying single-use plastic.
Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in our environment, much of it used just once and thrown away. World Refill Day shines a spotlight on the simple actions we can all take, such as carrying a reusable bottle, choosing refillable options, or supporting zero-waste shops. It also calls on businesses and governments to accelerate progress towards a circular economy.
Here in Greater Manchester, we know residents are ready for change. A recent survey showed 72% of people want to do more for the environment, especially when it comes to cutting down on plastic waste.
That’s why, to mark World Refill Day, we’ve launched a short survey in partnership with City to Sea to better understand how people in Greater Manchester currently use reusable and refillable products and what support they might need to do more.
The survey takes around 10 minutes and is open to all GMCA residents aged 18+. Take the resident survey here (external link).
We’re also inviting people to join a second phase of the study in July, with small focus groups and one-to-one interviews led by a behaviour change expert.

We’re also calling on Greater Manchester businesses to share their experience. Whether you currently offer reuse/refill options or are just starting out, your insights will help shape how we support businesses in the future.
Our short business survey takes just five minutes to complete. Take the business survey here. (external link).
There’s also an opportunity to take part in a business focus group during July. Register your interest for the business focus group here (external link).
All research is being hosted by our trusted partners at City to Sea. You’ll be asked for your consent to share your information with them for research purposes only.
