Greenspaces help people be happier and healthier

Here in Greater Manchester, we’re putting the environment at the heart of our plans for the future of our city region – alongside people’s future jobs and homes. So, how are we helping the natural world today, tomorrow and together?

Alongside environmental partners across Greater Manchester, GMCA is working towards the Five-Year Environment Plan across six areas:

Our energy supply

Transport and travel

Homes, workplaces and public buildings

Production and consumption of resources

The natural environment

Resilience and adaptation to the impacts of climate change

Oak leaves on tree

Specifically to reach the natural environment goals set out in the Five-Year Environment Plan, we are:

  • Designing an Environment Fund for Greater Manchester – to get more funding into our natural environment
  • Creating new volunteering and social prescribing opportunities at sites across Greater Manchester, such as Northern Roots project in Oldham and RHS Bridgewater opening in 2021
  • Working with City of Trees and the Urban Tree Challenge Fund to plant more than 2,500 additional trees across Greater Manchester (£1.5 million of investment)
  • The University of Salford’s creation of a Living Lab of green infrastructure – a green roof, green wall, natural drainage and trees – to show people first-hand the benefits these provide
  • Working with Defra and Natural England on Peatland Pilots to help us manage Greater Manchester’s peat for a sustainable future
  • Building on the My Wild City campaign with Lancashire Wildlife Trust to encourage people to bring wildlife into their own back gardens
