In the first of our guest blogs following the Greater Manchester Green Summit, headline sponsor Electricity North West explains how they are addressing the region’s capacity needs, exploring the exciting opportunities for flexibility, and how their Go Low Today service is supporting our customers.

Electricity North West is committed to powering a sustainable future for the North West. As the region’s electricity distributor, we’re working hard to ensure a reliable, affordable, and clean energy supply for everyone.

Meeting the region’s growing energy needs

To meet increasing electricity demand, we take a multi-faceted approach:

Upgrading infrastructure: Listening to our regional stakeholders and investing in essential upgrades to the electricity network to accommodate growth and the increase in adoption of low carbon technologies (e.g. heat pumps, electric vehicles, etc.)

Digitalising the grid: Implementing advanced technology to monitor and control the local network to release capacity, enhance reliability, and improve power quality

Enabling flexible electricity resources: Create markets and directly contract with flexible electricity resources (demand and/or supply) to provide services to the network to release capacity and accelerate adoption of low carbon technologies

The power of flexibility

To meet the growing demand for electricity and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future we are actively promoting and enabling flexibile electricity resources. Flexibile electricity resources allow us to adjust energy use or energy supply on the network.  By optimising energy consumption and energy supply in real-time, we can optimise existing infrastructure, create value for flexibility service providers, and release more capacity on the network from infrastructure upgrades.

Benefits of Flexibility:

Cost-effective solutions: By optimising energy use and supply, we can help keep energy costs down for businesses and consumers.

Accelerating the Net Zero transition: Flexibility helps to release network capacity, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.

Enhanced network resilience: Flexibility helps to balance supply and demand, improving the overall reliability of the electricity network.

New revenue opportunities: Businesses and consumers can earn additional revenue by participating in flexibility markets.

By embracing flexibility, we’re powering a more sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy future for the North West.
