Tucked away behind the charming Red House Farm in Dunham Massey, Olinda Community Gardens is quietly transforming a corner of Greater Manchester into a vibrant, green hub of community life.
What started as a bold idea in 2021, by founder Alice Belton, has blossomed into a thriving space for organic growing, learning, wellbeing and plenty of good vibes.
Every Wednesday and Friday morning, a cheerful crew of volunteers gets their hands dirty planting veg, clearing brambles, building compost heaps and sharing stories over cups of tea.
So what’s Olinda all about?
Olinda Community Gardens runs on three simple but powerful principles:
Food Security – They grow organic fruit and veg to eat, share, sell, and teach others how to cook and preserve it.
Biodiversity – From no-dig beds to pollinator-friendly planting, everything is designed to support soil health and wildlife. Expect to see bees buzzing, birds singing, and nature thriving.
Wellbeing & Community – Whether you’re an expert grower or a total newbie, everyone’s welcome. It’s a calming, inclusive space where people come to learn, decompress, and just enjoy being outdoors.
The garden has also become a magnet for eco-conscious local businesses who pitch in with corporate volunteering days and leave with muddy boots and big smiles. It’s a win-win for team building and the planet.
A Hidden Gem in a Historic Setting
While Dunham Massey’s formal gardens are lovingly maintained by the National Trust, Olinda brings a hands-on, grassroots energy to the estate. It’s a space where local people shape the land themselves growing food, friendships, and a greener future.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a curious beginner, or just someone who loves nature and a bit of good company, Olinda is the perfect place to dig in.
