City of Trees and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service planted Defra-funded trees at fire stations across the city-region.
City of Trees, the Community Forest for Greater Manchester, worked with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to plant standard trees funded by Defra’s Northern Forest fund at multiple fire stations across Greater Manchester. This is largely happened in National Tree Week in November 2024.
This is part of broader work between Greater Manchester Combined Authority and City of Trees to identify suitable sites for tree planting across their estate. This includes woodland creation at two former landfill sites last year.
The trees were planted by the City of Trees in-house contract team and a number of firefighters. The work was carried out as part of the green jobs programme, with team members coming from non-traditional routes into the sector, giving opportunities to a wider range of people from Greater Manchester and keeping resource in the region.
The video below was filmed at Farnworth Fire Station in Bolton. Seven hawthorns were planted on the site and 32 standards were planted across the seven fire stations in total. The new trees will increase biodiversity on the sites and most importantly create happier, healthier places for the firefighters to work.
